Ten months ago, the Calgary Flames were riding high. They finished atop the Western Conference standings and were prominent throughout awards balloting. This season, they probably won’t be as high profile.
With award balloting underway, let’s handicap the Flames’ chances.
Vezina Trophy (Top Goaltender)
David Rittich was Calgary’s busier goalie. Of goalies with 20+ games played, he was 36th in save percentage and 40th in goals against average. He won’t get votes. Cam Talbot was the less busy goalie (which hurts his chances) and his box-cars were 13th and 19th, respectively. He, too, won’t get votes.
Calder Trophy (Top Rookie)
The Flames’ top rookie skater, Dillon Dube, had 16 points. That would place him 22nd in rookie scoring. Not awful, but not enough to crack any ballots for the Calder.
Jack Adams Award (Top Coach)
Last season, Craig Berube took the St. Louis Blues on a “worst to first” run that saw them go from 31st in the standings at one point to hoisting the Stanley Cup. He was a finalist for the Jack Adams. Can Geoff Ward do the same this year? Probably not. Ward was behind the bench for a 25-15-3 record, a good amount better than the 11-12-4 he inherited. That said, there are a few coaches with stronger cases.
Selke Trophy (Top Defensive Forward)
Because what qualifies someone as a “top defensive forward” is muddy, the Selke has evolved into a reputational award. Both Mikael Backlund and Elias Lindholm have received votes in recent seasons. However, neither had amazing years on a two-way basis: Backlund was plus-3 and Lindholm minus-8 (if you think plus/minus matters). Moreover, both players were bounced around the lineup and were victims of a team that had a fairly meh goal differential relative to the rest of the league. Neither will get a ton of consideration this season.
Messier Leadership Award
As always, Mark Giordano will be a contender for this. He was a finalist last year and is a respected long-time captain who hasn’t won it yet. He’ll probably get this award once before he retires at the age of 150, but will it be this year? His role at steering the ship during the Bill Peters racism debacle will get him additional consideration.
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Gentlemanly Conduct)
The Lady Byng typically goes to a player that has a lot of points but not a lot of penalty minutes. Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau have been perennial contenders, with Gaudreau capturing the trophy in 2017. Monahan gooned it up this season, with 25 penalty minutes (including a fight). Gaudreau only had six minors this season, but his disappointing offensive totals (by his standards) may hinder his chances. Gaudreau will likely get some votes, but probably won’t win.
Norris Trophy (Top Defenseman)
Another reputation award, Giordano won the trophy in a landslide last season. He was 44th in points among defenders this season, which hurts his standing, as does the fact that so many players had great seasons in this category. He might sneak onto a ballot here or there with a fifth place vote, but he’s not a strong contender for a repeat.
Hart Trophy (MVP)
The Flames weren’t an elite team this season and they didn’t have an MVP-type season by any of their big guns, which itself kind of explains why they were a bubble team for the post-season. It’s likely nobody on their roster gets onto any Hart ballots.
