This week in 2003 (July 3), the Calgary Flames completed a big, three-way trade acquiring center Steve Reinprecht and defenceman Rhett Warrener.

Here’s how the deal broke down: the Buffalo Sabres traded defenceman Keith Ballard to the Colorado Avalanche for Reinprecht, then flipped him and Warrener to the Flames for center Chris Drury and Steve Begin.

Reinprecht didn’t last long in Calgary, however, as a year and a half later he was dealt. In the 96 games he did play, he scored 17 goals and 58 points.

Calgary traded him along with Philippe Sauve to the Phoenix Coyotes for Brian Boucher and Mike Lecler in Feb. 2006.

Warrener, meanwhile, found himself a nice home in Calgary playing in the club’s second and third pairs. In 231 games, he didn’t chip in much offence scoring only 11 goals and 37 points, but he was a solid +19 over his time in Calgary.

He last played in 2007-08 and missed the 2008-09 season with a shoulder injury. He retired the next year but remained with the Flames as a scout.
