In advance of the Calgary Flames’ first game in three weeks, the club has summoned their top goaltending prospect. The Flames have recalled Dustin Wolf from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat as part of four roster moves prior to their game in Seattle.

Here’s the rundown:
- Dan Vladar has been declared non-roster and is unavailable for tonight.
- Wolf has been recalled on an emergency basis.
- Brett Ritchie has moved from the injury reserve list to the COVID non-roster list. He’s the 21st player to hit the list this month.
- Byron Froese has been moved to the taxi squad. (We’re told this was done for cap purposes a couple of days ago, but it’s being announced now.)
Wolf, 20, has been one of the best stories in the entire AHL this season. In 16 games, the rookie netminder has yet to lose in regulation, posting a 14-0-2 record with a 1.84 goals against average and .940 save percentage. He’s among the statistical leaders in the AHL in basically every goaltending category. Wolf was originally a seventh round pick of the Flames in the 2019 NHL Draft.
What we’re hearing is Dan Vladar isn’t available to back up Jacob Markström due to the timing of his positive COVID-19 test complicating his involvement on the trip to Seattle – because the club is crossing the border twice, they have to adhere to both Canadian and American immigration, testing and quarantine rules. (To bore you with details, previously-positive individuals need a doctor’s note documenting recovery from COVID-19 over the past 90 days to enter the United States, but they require documentation of a positive test from between 14-180 days ago to enter Canada without additional complications.) Seemingly in a way to simplify everybody’s lives, Wolf has been recalled and will back up Markström tonight.
Wolf was a superstar with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, who play 40 minutes up the road from Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, so even though he likely won’t see any game action this is a pretty big personal milestone for the young netminder.
