Time moves fast for trade deadline acquisitions and Brennan Othmann is one of the players in that category. Othmann was acquired in a trade for Jacob Battaglia late on trade deadline day. Now, about a month later, he’s making an impression in the Flames’ organization between the AHL and NHL. He’s fresh off a two game stint with the Flames and has some good feedback to work with for the remaining two weeks of the season.
Othmann started his time in Calgary with the Wranglers and has played in 10 games so far and has registered five assists in that stretch. He has bounced around a little bit in the AHL lineup and has played games on left wing for the top three lines, looking for some chemistry with his new teammates. He’s played the most games alongside Clark Bishop, Sam Morton, and William Stromgren. In the NHL, he played two games with the Flames alongside John Beecher, Adam Klapka and Tyson Gross. In that stretch, he had an assist in his first game and a goal in his second. After this whirlwind of a month, he took a bit of time to reflect. Othmann said:
“I feel good. Feel good about my game. Confident in where I’m at. I get feedback from everybody. Obviously coming to a new team late in the year, it’s a hard transition, but the staff, players, organization, make it super easy and comfortable.”
Prior to coming to the Flames organization, Othmann played 42 games over three seasons with his draft organization, the New York Rangers, and had a goal and two assists through that stretch. Even in just two games with the Flames and NHL experience already on his hockey resume, Othmann doesn’t discount how impactful it is to get time at that level. He said:
“I know I’ve played a few games now. I don’t know 40-ish games or something like that. Every time you put on an NHL jersey it feels special and we’re living out our dream as a kid and now you just kind of what to make yourself an everyday player. It feels good scoring and putting up points and being able to build some confidence for next year going into camp. I got really positive feedback and it’s kind of what I was looking for and I just used the chance to show the fans and the organization my game. I thought I did a good job at it so hopefully I can earn more and get more next year.”
While Othmann comes into a scenario where both teams are not going to be playoff bound this year, he doesn’t find that discouraging and talked about how he still wants to win hockey games and, regardless of the season result, winning is still fun. He also talked about some relationships he is building with players he already knew coming in. One of those being another trade deadline acquisition, Ryan Strome. He said:
“I’ve built a good relationship with Ryan Strome up at the Flames. I’ve known him for a few years now. Skated with him in the summertime, and same agency, and we kind of just talked on the phone last night. It doesn’t matter if there’s four games left, or if you’re starting off a year. It’s still hockey and everyone’s kind of evaluating and it doesn’t matter what place you’re in. It’s a job and it’s only 2 weeks more of a job, so just get it done, grind it out, and then you kind of enjoy the summertime. Obviously, I’d love to stay up with the Flames, but at the end of the day, there’s a lot of different circumstances that can go into coming back down that many people may not know.”
Lucky for Othmann that on both teams, he has guys he already knew coming in that help ease that transition. On the Wranglers’ side, he already played with Gavin White and won a championship with him back in the OHL with the Peterborough Petes in the 2022-23 season. With Othmann on the Wranglers, White is no longer one of the newest guys on the team but the two can bond on their previous experiences together and their shared experience of learning and adapting to a new organization. Othmann said:
“He’s an awesome dude. He’s an interesting guy. I mean that in the best way possible. He’s an amazing person and I’m really glad I can play with him again. He can fit in any dressing room instantly. He’s a great guy, a lot of the guys love him. When we were in Peterborough, we were all gonna be friends for life and I didn’t think that I’d play with anyone again and here we are playing with Whitey again, it’s awesome.”
Othmann is on an entry level contract that expires at the end of this season. The first priority for him in these last four games with the Wranglers is to earn his next contract, then from there, earn an NHL spot out of camp, whether that be with the Flames or with the next organization he lands with. With what Othmann has shown so far, he fits a role both teams have been able to use and his ties to existing players especially strengthen his case for a new contract in Calgary.
