Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman unveiled his latest 31 Thoughts column on Wednesday. In it, he provided some insight into potential land spots for embattled Calgary Flames winger Sam Bennett (who has recently requested a trade).
Here’s Friedman:
15. The Jets did an excellent job of staying above water while shorthanded because of quarantine rules. The strict Canadian regulations have absolutely had an effect on Sam Bennett’s future, although if he keeps scoring alongside Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, the Flames won’t be too eager to do anything. Anaheim, Colorado and Columbus are among those who checked in. Curious to see if Pittsburgh does now that Burke is there.
Anaheim and Pittsburgh are both currently over the cap and compliant only because of utilizing long-term injury reserve space. Colorado and Columbus both have some cap space, but are carrying smaller rosters to conserve space currently.
Presuming each team would be looking for a cap-in for cap-out swap of forwards, players the Flames might be looking at include Anaheim’s Danton Heinen ($2.8 million), Colorado’s Valeri Nichushkin ($2.5 million) or Pierre-Edouard Bellemare ($1.8 million), Columbus’ Riley Nash ($2.75 million) or Pittsburgh’s Colton Sceviour ($1.2 million).
Heinen or Nichushkin could be nice age group assets in their mid-20s, but the remainder would be the Flames presumably trying to shore up their traditional hockey toughness bonafides.
