8 Calgary Flames players have active clauses restricting trades

Things haven’t gone as planned for the Calgary Flames this season, and that’s led to some clamouring among the fan-base for big changes to the hockey club’s roster in the run-up to the 2023 trade deadline. (Comments section: we hear you.)
However, the Flames’ hands are tied somewhat in terms of player movement, as eight Flames players – a third of the NHL roster – have clauses in their contracts restricting their movement to other teams.
(Stick-taps to CapFriendly for their handy breakdowns of contract details and clauses.)

Nazem Kadri

Kadri has a no-movement clause in his contract, running from this season through 2025-26. In 2026-27, it becomes a modified no-trade clause where he names 13 teams that he won’t go to.

Jonathan Huberdeau

Huberdeau is in the final year of his Florida deal, which has an eight-team no-trade clause in it. Next season, it becomes a full no-movement clause that runs through the duration of his extension.

Mikael Backlund

Backlund has a modified no-trade clause this season and next season, the final two of his current deal, where he lists 10 teams that he’ll go to.

Milan Lucic

So Lucic has two clauses, but there’s a good reason for it. His deal has both a full no-movement clause and a modified no-trade clause where he lists 10 teams that he’ll go to.
Lucic’s deal was signed under the previous CBA and under that document, an acquiring team could decide whether to honour clauses that hadn’t become active yet. So for Lucic, having a no-movement clause throughout his deal in addition to a no-trade clause late in his deal made sure that he had some control over where he was going to be late in his career. (That wrinkle has since been removed from the amended CBA, and so negotiated clauses remain intact throughout the life of a contract.)

Blake Coleman

Coleman has a full no-trade clause this season and next. Starting in 2024-25, his deal has a modified no-trade clause where he names 10 teams he would accept a trade to.

Noah Hanifin

Hanifin’s contract has a modified no-trade clause where he lists eight teams he won’t go to.

Chris Tanev

Tanev’s contract has a modified no-trade clause where he lists 10 teams he won’t go to.

Jacob Markstrom

Markstrom’s deal has a full no-movement clause.

Clauses that aren’t in force yet

Three Flames have clauses in their deals, but they’re not active yet:
  • Andrew Mangiapane has an eight-team no-trade list for 2023-24 and 2024-25.
  • Rasmus Andersson has a six-team no-trade list for 2024-25 and 2025-26.
  • MacKenzie Weegar has a full no-trade clause for 2023-24 through 2026-27, then a 10-team no-trade list from 2027-28 through 2030-31.
