Are any Flames award contenders?
By Ryan Pike
6 years agoIt’s the All-Star Break and the assembled hockey world is evaluating the National Hockey League’s first big chunk of the season. When it comes to the Calgary Flames, we assembled our staff to assess whether or not any of the locals are true award contenders after 48 games.
None of us thought that anybody contended for the Calder Memorial Trophy (top rookie), GM of the Year or Jack Adams Award (top coach).
Hart Memorial Trophy
Awarded to the player judged most valuable to his team.
Johnny Gaudreau – Christian T, Karim, Ryan, Taylor, Bill, Christian R, Ari
“He’s not only one of the top scorers in the league but he’s there without any of his teammates nearby, and in on over 40% of the Flames’ offence.” – Ari
Mike Smith – Ryan
“If I have to choose, I’m leaning Smith because he’s been the team’s most consistent difference-maker.”
Vezina Trophy
Awarded to the top goaltender in the league.
Mike Smith – Christian T, Karim, Ryan, Bill, Christian R, Ari
“Smith is making a legitimate case here, though I don’t think he’ll win, but if he keeps this up he should be a finalist.” – Ari
Frank J. Selke Trophy
Awarded to the top defensive forward in the league.
Mikael Backlund – Christian T, Karim, Ryan, Taylor, Bill, Christian R, Ari
“Because he came close to being a finalist last year it means voters are aware he exists now, but he’ll likely need an uptick in scoring to get back there.” – Ari
“It’s a bit of a reputation vote, but he’s been very good again.” – Ryan
Matthew Tkachuk – Christian T
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
Johnny Gaudreau – Karim, Taylor, Christian R
Gaudreau did win the PHWA’s Midseason Lady Byng Trophy.
Michael Frolik – Christian T
Sean Monahan – Bill
