On Monday’s episode of Barn Burner, Boomer, Pinder, and Rhett had insider Frank Seravalli on the show to dive into some updates on the top two players on his Trade Targets Board over at Daily Faceoff in Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin.
On the Tanev front, Seravalli speculated that the teams we have been hearing about for a while, including Vancouver and Edmonton, are still in the mix for the right shot defensive defencemen. However, he would go on to single out one Western Conference team that could have a leg up on the other suitors.
“I think the Flames and Stars were pretty advanced on discussion surrounding Tanev a few weeks back. I don’t know what held things up but it seems like that was a pretty natural fit that both teams had talked in depth about that I think has a real chance to be revisited here over the next 11 days.”
For Hanifin, things might be a little more complicated due to the fact he is due for a significant contract extension at the end of the season. While Boston and Tampa are both spots that Hanifin has indicated interest in going to, Frank wasn’t as optimistic that a deal could get done.
“If Boston is interested. They don’t have a ton of prospects…. I don’t see a path of getting to a deal. I don’t see a path to getting to a deal from Tampa… Where do you come together to make a deal based on not having a first round pick until 2026? I have a hard time seeing it.”
Seravalli also indicated to Flames fans that they might not get the home run haul they are expecting for a player that is tied for the team lead in points this year.
“For Hanifin, it’s probably going to be a somewhat disappointing return compared to what you think the impact is on the player side and what you’re giving up off of your team…. You don’t have a list of eight teams bidding for his services like the Flames do with Tanev, where it might be eight or ten teams in the mix. You’re probably having to try and squeeze out a little more on Tanev and take a little less on Hanifin in order to try and balance all this out… I think this is a big explanation why Tanev hasn’t moved yet.”
