Brad Treliving Named Co-GM For Canada’s World Championship Team

8 years agoThe Calgary Flames may be finishing up their schedule when the 2015-16 campaign ends on April 9, but their general manager is now going to be a little bit busier than usual.
In addition to working on NHL Draft preparation, Brad Treliving will be serving as co-general manager for Team Canada’s entry at the 2016 World Hockey Championship, working alongside veteran hockey executive George McPhee. The tournament runs May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.
If you’ve paid attention to the Flames and their hirings (and connections) over the past few years, Treliving’s appointment to this position really shouldn’t be all that surprising.
Here’s the tangled web:
- Treliving previously worked with Hockey Canada as an assistant GM at the 2013-14 Worlds and the 2013 Spengler Cup.
- George McPhee is a long-time former GM and is buddies with Brian Burke. (Twitter panicked back when Burke served as interim GM when McPhee was shown on TV sitting with him in the press box.)
- The Flames hired Brad Pascall out of Hockey Canada, where he headed the national teams program.
- The guy that now has Pascall’s job, Scott Salmond, used to be Pascall’s right-hand man.
- The Flames also hired their AHL goalie coach, Scott Gouthro, after seeing him at work at a few U18 goalie camps while scouting for their drafts.
Hockey Canada is reportedly using the World Championship as a way of evaluating potential players for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, so there’s a good chance that Canadian bubble players that find themselves out of the playoffs might postpone their summer vacations until after the tournament rather than take themselves out of the running for the fall tournament.
I’m not saying “pencil Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie onto the World Championship roster…” but… Actually, yeah, I’m basically saying that. If nothing else, this announcement signifies that Hockey Canada holds Treliving in as high esteem as Flames fans do, at least thus far into his tenure.
