Calgary Flames prospect Arsenii Sergeev transfers to Penn State for 2023-24

Well, that was fast.

On Monday, news broke that Calgary Flames goaltending prospect Arsenii Sergeev had entered the transfer portal in the NCAA. On Tuesday, news broke that Sergeev will be playing for Penn State University’s men’s hockey team for the 2024-25 campaign, his junior year of college eligibility.

Penn State finished in sixth place in the seven team Big 10 Conference this season, posting a record of 7-14-3 in conference play and 15-18-3 overall. Their goaltenders this past season were senior Liam Souliere (12-14-1, 3.38 GAA, .874 SV%), sophomore Noah Grannan (3-4-2, 3.33 GAA, .885 SV%) and senior Doug Dorr (who played just a handful of minutes as the third-stringer). Souliere has entered the transfer portal, so it appears that Sergeev will have the inside track at the top job.

With senior Chase McLane (a Nashville Predators prospect) likely leaving the program after four seasons, Sergeev joins Predators prospect Aidan Fink and San Jose Sharks prospect Reese Laubach as the only NHL-affiliated prospects at Penn State. (More could join as members of their incoming freshman class potentially get drafted, though.)

Originally from Yaroslavl, Russia, Sergeev has played in North America since 2019-20. He was selected by the Flames in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL Draft, and was named the United States Hockey League’s goaltender of the year the following season. In 35 NCAA appearances over two seasons at UConn, Sergeev is 19-14-1 with a 2.65 goals against average, .913 save percentage and one shutout.

Penn State hasn’t been an amazing team over the last few years, but they also haven’t gotten stellar goaltending. With Sergeev landing there, it seems pretty apparent that if he performs well, he’ll get a ton of runway to prove that he can be the goaltender that he (and the Flames) think he can become.
