The World Junior roster announcements are often a bit of a referendum on a team’s prospect base. If that’s true, the Calgary Flames have an unimpressive prospect base – only Matthew Coronato will be at the World Juniors.
But if you look at some of the performances they’ve gotten so far – especially out of some of their players in the American Hockey League – the World Juniors aren’t the be-all, end-all that you might think.

This and that:

  • D Johannes Kinnvall and G Tyler Parsons are on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve after suffering injuries.
  • We’re not including Juuso Välimäki’s AHL run in here because (a) it’s been three games and (b) he’s played enough NHL games that we no longer consider him a prospect.

Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe

Beck remains injured and is listed as week-to-week. He hasn’t played since Nov. 7. (Despite missing that many games, he’s just one goal behind the team lead.)

Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date1717875412.84

Boltmann continues his very steady offensive season on the blueline for the Fighting Irish. He’s worked his way up to the top defensive pairing. The Fighting Irish are now off until January.

Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date24481298512.38
Change from last week3112211+0.59
Ciona’s streaky season continues. He had a two point game (in a 6-1 Seattle blowout win), followed by a couple quiet offensive games. He’s eighth on the Thunderbirds in points (and first in penalty minutes).

Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE

Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect

The good news is that Feuk had a goal this week! The bad news is that this goal came in Sweden’s third division, two rungs below the Swedish Hockey League, where NHL prospects rarely return from.

Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect

Change from last week2213333+1.11
Friends, Gawdin has super impressive numbers in the AHL, but he’s 25. Pelletier has super impressive numbers in the AHL, and he’s a 20-year-old rookie.

Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
