Everybody is utilizing the pause in the National Hockey League schedule differently. For Calgary Flames goaltender David Rittich, he’s using it to heal up an elbow injury according to a recent article from NHL.com correspondent Michael Langr.
Here’s what Rittich had to say:
One day before leaving [Calgary], I had gotten a plasma injection into my elbow that had been bruised and I had some stretched tendons there… I could not do anything for a week. … This week, I started to exercise a bit and recover. I am in quarantine, so it was a bit of a problem to get some workout equipment from the fitness center. My friend is going to lend me some stuff here in Jihlava so that I can start with some preparations. So far it has been only working out with my own body weight.
Rittich last played on March 8 in a 5-3 loss to Vegas. It’s unclear precisely when he was injured, but prior to the shutdown he played once in the last four outings – granted, Cam Talbot had won several games in a row, which is also a solid explanation for using him more.
Last season Rittich was hampered by a knee injury suffered on New Year’s Eve. The resultant strain on his play saw his numbers dip and him effectively supplanted as top goalie by Mike Smith. If Rittich was injured awhile back, it would make sense and could explain some of his recent struggles. If the injury was more recent, maybe there are other issues hampering his recent play.
