FGD: AHL All-Star Game
By Ryan Pike
10 years agoThe Olympics men’s hockey tournament kicked off earlier today, but the American Hockey League presents a different kind of international showcase tonight in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador in the form of the annual AHL All-Star Game. Rather than present a traditional “all-star game” with two conference teams, the AHL instead is challenging a club team from the idle SHL, Farjestads BK.
Fun fact, Farjestads is (a) Danny Taylor’s new team (but he’s injured and won’t play) and (b) Hakan Loob’s team. The game kicked off at 4:30pm MT on Sportsnet.
Here are the rosters for this evening!
AHL All-Stars | Farjestads BK |
34 – Dustin Tokarski (Hamilton) 35 – Jake Allen (Chicago) | 30 – Pekka Tuokkola 35 – Fredrik Pettersson-Wentzel |
3 – T.J. Brennan (Toronto) 8 – Brenden Kichton (St. John’s) 32 – Frederic St. Denis (Springfield) 41 – CHAD BILLINS (Abbotsford) 44 – Braydon McNabb (Rochester) 47 – Alexey Marchenko (Grand Rapids) 72 – Cody Goloubef (Springfeld) | 6 – Ludwig Bystrom 7 – Shawn Belle 14 – Oliver Kylington 15 – Wilhelm Westlund 32 – Magnus Nygren 40 – Niklas Arell 47 – Ville Lajunen |
7 – Colton Sceviour (Texas) 9 – BEN STREET (Abbotsford) 15 – Jason Jaffray (St. John’s) 17 – Luke Adam (Rochester) 18 – Colton Sissons (Milwaukee) 19 – Brian Gibbons (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton) 21 – Joe Whitney (Albany) 23 – Travis Morin (Texas) 27 – Mike Hoffman (Binghamton) 28 – Brett Connolly (Syracuse) 73 – Brandon Pirri (Rockford) 81 – Ryan Strome (Bridgeport) | 11 – Christoffer Forsberg 16 – Joakim Nygard 22 – Per Aslund 28 – Tomas Hyka 33 – Linus Froberg 36 – Charles Bertrand 42 – Joakim Hillding 44 – Milan Gulas 46 – Pontus Aberg 51 – Rickard Wallin 71 – Christian Berglund 79 – Patrik Lundh 89 – Jack Connolly |
Of note on the AHL side: Chad Billins and Ben Street have both spent time with the Flames this season, Street recently being demoted back to the minors seemingly just so he could be in the All-Star Game. Also of note, Jason Jaffray (a former Abbotsford farmhand) and Ryan Strome. Colton Sceviour and Travis Morin have been lights-out this year in Texas, and just brutalize the Heat every time they play them.
On the Farjestads side: Pettersson-Wentzel was an Atlanta Thrashers pick in 2010 and Shawn Belle is the same one that was a 30th overall pick by the Blues in 2003. Of current NHL prospects: Wilhelm Westlund is a Colorado 7th rounder from 2013, Ludwig Bystrom is a Stars 2nd rounder from 2012, Magnus Nygren is a Habs 2011 pick on loan from the AHL to Farjestads, Pontus Aberg was a Predators 2nd rounder from 2012 and Tomas Hyka is a Kings 6th rounder from 2012.
Farjestads is a .500 team in the SHL, but they’ve played together all year and are facing a hodge-podge group of AHLers who have been tangling against each other all season. It should be a fun night of All-Star action to whet everyone’s collective hockey appetites for the buffet of Olympic action we’ll be getting tomorrow.
