Flames acquire Nick Shore from Ottawa for 2019 7th rounder

The Calgary Flames have made a second move before the National Hockey League’s trade deadline, and it’s about as minor as their previous one was. They have acquired center Nick Shore from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2019 seventh round pick.

Shore, 25, is a right-shot center and a pending restricted free agent on July 1 currently making $925,000. Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2011, he played his college hockey for the University of Denver before eventually joining the Kings in the pro ranks. He was traded to Ottawa earlier this season in the Dion Phaneuf trade.

Shore has 16 points in 55 games split between the Kings and Senators. He’s played almost entirely the center position and gives the Flames both a right-shot option up the middle (which they didn’t have before) and potentially someone to spell off Matt Stajan on the fourth line here and there.

Like the Flames’ other deadline day acquisition, Shore gives the Flames a right-shot option in their bottom six and is extremely, extremely inexpensive. All due respect to the young men selected in that round, but trading somebody for a seventh round pick is basically giving them away for free.
