Flames and Ferland Reportedly Agree To Two-Year Deal

Just under the wire, Brad Treliving has reportedly finished up the last bit of unfinished business for the summer. Earlier today, reports emerged of a deal between the Flames and restricted free agent Micheal Ferland.

If as reported, the deal would eat up a year of Ferland’s arbitration eligibility. It seems like a perfectly fine bridge contract for a player with 26 NHL regular season games on his resume and an opportunity for him to prove himself.

Ferland, 23, was Calgary’s fifth round selection in the 2010 NHL Draft. He spent his junior career primarily with the Brandon Wheat Kings, but he also spent time with Saskatoon Blades during the tumultuous 2012-13 season that saw Ferland bounce between four teams and three leagues. He was a contender to turn pro as a 20-year-old, but went back as an overager after failing to stick in either Abbotsford or the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies that season. His following season started strong in Abbotsford but was cut short due to a knee injury.

The 2014-15 campaign was his break-through, as he played well in Adirondack and then was a strong energy player on Calgary’s fourth line late in the season. He was one of Calgary’s most effective players in the post-season, using his physicality to wear down Vancouver’s defense over the six-game opening round series.
