Flames announce 2020-21 schedule (but without times)
By Ryan Pike
3 years agoWe know what dates the Calgary Flames will be playing games during the 2020-21 regular season, but not times. The National Hockey League released their schedule on Wednesday afternoon, but without start times included.
The Flames play 56 games (obviously): 10 times each against Edmonton and Vancouver, and nine each with Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.
Here’s how it breaks down:
- The season-opener is Jan. 14 (Thu.) in Winnipeg.
- Four at home against Vancouver (Sat., Jan. 16 & Mon., Jan. 18) and Toronto (Sun., Jan. 24 & Tue., Jan. 26).
- Five on the road against Montreal (Thu., Jan. 28 & Sat., Jan. 30) and Winnipeg (Mon., Feb. 1, Tue., Feb. 2 & Thu., Feb. 4).
- Two at home against Edmonton (Sat., Feb. 6) and Winnipeg (Tue., Feb. 9).
- Three on the road against Vancouver (Thu., Feb. 11, Sat., Feb. 13 & Mon., Feb. 15).
- Two at home against Vancouver (Wed., Feb. 17) and Edmonton (Fri., Feb. 19).
- Six on the road against Edmonton (Sat., Feb. 20), Toronto (Mon., Feb. 22 & Wed., Feb. 24) and Ottawa (Thu., Feb. 25, Sat., Feb. 27 & Mon., Mar. 1).
- One at home against Ottawa (Thu., Mar. 4.).
- One on the road against Edmonton (Sat., Mar. 6).
- Five at home against Ottawa (Sun., Mar. 7), Montreal (Thu., Mar. 11 & Sat., Mar. 13) and Edmonton (Mon., Mar. 15 & Wed., Mar. 17).
- Four on the road against Toronto (Fri., Mar. 19 & Sat., Mar. 20) and Ottawa (Mon., Mar. 22 & Wed., Mar. 24).
- Three at home against Winnipeg (Fri., Mar. 26, Sat., Mar. 27 & Mon., Mar. 29).
- Two on the road against Vancouver (Wed., Mar. 31) and Edmonton (Fri., Apr. 2).
- Four at home against Toronto (Sun., Apr. 4 & Mon., Apr. 5) and Vancouver (Thu., Apr. 8 & Sat., Apr. 10).
- Three on the road against Toronto (Tue., Apr. 13) and Montreal (Wed., Apr. 14 & Fri., Apr. 16).
- Five at home against Ottawa (Mon., Apr. 19 & Tue., Apr. 20) and Montreal (Thu., Apr. 22, Sat., Apr. 24 & Mon., Apr. 26).
- Two on the road against Edmonton (Thu., Apr. 29 & Sat., May 1).
- Two at home against Winnipeg (Wed., May 5) and Edmonton (Fri., May 7).
- One on the road against Vancouver (Sat., May 8).
They play 10 sets of back-to-backs, though half involve zero travel between cities.
The most brutal part of the schedule may run Feb. 19-25, which sees them play five games (including two pairs of back-to-backs) in four different cities (Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa) over a stretch of seven nights.
The Flames play on 14 of the 17 Saturdays during the regular season.
If you’re a baseball fan, the Flames basically have a handful of hefty baseball-style series:
- Three against the Jets in Winnipeg (Feb. 1-4), also part of four out of five games against Winnipeg (broken up by a Battle of Alberta).
- Four against Vancouver (Feb. 11-17), split between the two cities.
- Four against Ottawa (Feb. 25 to Mar. 4), split between the two cities.
- Three against the Jets in Calgary (Mar. 26-29).
- Three against the Canadiens in Calgary (Apr. 22-26).
Overall, the schedule is pretty weird, but just as zany and compressed as we were led to believe.
