Flames Flames Bill Hay, Phil Housley Named To Hall of Fame

The Hockey Hall of Fame announced its induction Class of 2015 this afternoon, naming five players and two builders to its ranks. The 2015 inductions will take place in November, and have a Calgary Flames flavour to them.

Former Flames president Bill Hay and defenseman Phil Housley were both named for induction.

A native of Lumsden, Saskatchewan, Hay is the son of Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Charles Hay, and became a strong NHLer in his own right. Hay played center for the Chicago Blackhawks between 1960 and 1967, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy in 1960 and the Stanley Cup in 1961. Upon retirement, he stayed active in the game and in business. He served as president of the Calgary Flames from 1991 to 1996. He later joined the Hockey Hall of Fame as the organization’s chairman. Hay is inducted as a builder.

Housley was the sixth overall pick of the Buffalo Sabres way back in 1982. He suited up for 1495 NHL contests with Buffalo, Winnipeg, St. Louis, New Jersey, Washington, Chicago, Toronto, in addition to serving two tours of duty with the Calgary Flames. He scored 1232 points in his career, operating as one of the league’s most outstanding power-play quarterbacks and offensive defenders. His best season was 1992-93, when he scored an amazing 97 points for the Jets. He’s currently an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators. Housley is the highest-scoring American-born defenseman of all-time (and third among all Americans in scoring). He’s inducted as a player.

The 2015 Hockey Hall of Fame inductions will take place Monday, November 9.
