We’re a day and a half away from the 2020 NHL trade deadline, friends, and there’s a lot of familiar chatter. On Hockey Night in Canada, there were enough rumours on Saturday night to split into two Headlines segments. The second one had a pretty major rumour involving the Calgary Flames.
First, as previously reported by various other folks, the Flames are interested in Toronto’s Tyson Barrie. Elliotte Friedman mentioned the Flames, Canucks and Golden Knights in that market.
But Chris Johnston had an even more interesting piece of intel:
The Calgary Flames, they have one more game before the deadline, tomorrow night in Detroit on Hometown Hockey. I think they’re a team – you mentioned them in the Barrie talks, Elliotte – that would like to do a hockey deal, if possible. More than just acquiring a rental. And I think there are some big names that are being part of the conversations they’re having this weekend. Those are typically tough deals to make at the deadline, but we’ll see if they can get something done there.
A “hockey deal” may involve some changing of the Flames mix. TSN’s Frank Seravalli mentioned that Noah Hanifin was one component of a nearly-completed deal with New Jersey for Taylor Hall – the Devils ended up going with the more futures-centric package from Arizona.
Needless to say: the Flames could look a lot different by 1 p.m. MT on Monday. Or, maybe they won’t, and the major changes could come at the NHL Draft in June.
