Flames Place Jones On IR, Recall Jones

The Flames did some roster shuffling this morning, and a lot of it was about keeping up with their Joneses.
First off, winger David Jones was placed on the injured reserve (retroactive to yesterday) with an upper body injury. The Flames are saying he’s week-to-week after taking a tumble in the corner while tangling with Habs defender Francis Bouillon in the third period of last night’s 3-2 win. Jones had two goals and two assists in the first four games.
The Flames filled Jones’ spot on the roster with another Jones. Forward Blair Jones was recalled from the AHLs Abbotsford Heat. In two games with the Heat so far this year, Jones has two assists. Blair cleared waivers on October 1 and was re-assigned to the Heat, meaning if he’s sent back to the Heat by (or before) November 1, he won’t require waivers again. That and his familiarity with the Flames systems as a late cut probably explains the recall. Plus, the Flames replace a point-per-game player with a point-per-game player and a Jones with a Jones (sort of, but not really).
The Flames also announced that Chris Breen, recuperating from shoulder surgery he had last spring, has been activated from the non-roster IR and assigned to the Abbotsford Heat for conditioning. His stint will be 14 days long and he’ll need to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL on a regular basis, but for now he still counts as part of the 23-man NHL roster.
Breen took big strides last year after being a marginal guy for the Heat in years past. Had he stayed healthy, he probably would’ve gotten a look in Calgary late in the year after all the trades. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the OHL, Breen has 26 points in 204 AHL games, all with the Heat. Derek Smith is in his way on the current roster for the 7th defender spot, although Smith cleared waivers at the start of the season so could probably be sent down without issue if the team decides that want to keep Breen with the parent club.
