Flames Prospect Update, October 29 2012

 

 

While the world prepares for the impending onslaught of Hurricane Sandy (aka “the Frankenstorm”), the hockey world recovers from a busy weekend. Here’s what happened that concerns the Calgary Flames.

Faced with a tough three-games-in-48-hour stretch this weekend, the road-faring Abbotsford Heat performed fairly well, gaining half of the available points. They won on Friday and lost in a shootout to Lake Erie on Saturday. Then they bussed to Hamilton and ran out of gas on the ice, losing 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Roman Horak scored three goals and an assist on the weekend. Sven Baertschi had two assists. Heat newcomer Brett Olson had three points in Friday’s game. Danny Taylor started twice and made 30 saves on Friday. Leland Irving finally started a game on Saturday and made 29 saves, but failed to hold a one-goal third period lead.

Down in the ECHL, Utah won two games via shootout and Ryan Howse scored in both shootouts. He also scored his first ECHL goal in Saturday’s game, which also saw Bryan Cameron have a three-point effort.

It was a weekend of good and bad for the junior kids.

Portland blueliner Tyler Wotherspoon had three points (and a plus-4 rating) in two weekend games. e now has eight points in just 11 games played. Red Deer captain Turner Elson had two goals against Calgary and had three points altogther. Vancouver defender Brett Kulak had an ugly minus-3, but also had a goal and an assist. Edmonton goalie Laurent Brossoit gave up three goals against Kelowna but still got the win. Coda Gordon had just a single assist in three games this week.

Wearing the alternate captain’s A with regular captain Martin Lefebvre out of the line-up, Quebec’s Ryan Culkin had two assists as the Remparts won two of three on the weekend. Windsor alternate captain Patrick Sieloff scored a goal and was plus-3, but the Spitfires lost two of their three weekend contests.

Notre Dame senior Nick Larson scored a goal and his team won both of their games. Matt Deblouw, of the Michigan State Spartans, assisted on the game-winner for his team this weekend as they split a pair with Lake Superior State.

Over in Hockey East, Jon Gillies allowed two goals over two starts and got his first college shut-out on Saturday. He’s amongst the statistical goaltending leaders for his conference. His Providence College teammate, Mark Jankowski, had no points.

The Boston College boys, Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold, both collected points. Gaudreau had the game-winning goal and game-winning assist in a weekend sweep over U-Mass Lowell. Bill Arnold was in on four of the six Boston College goals on Sunday, as he had a goal and three assists. Gaudreau has at least a point in every game this year and Arnold has proven to be a very strong all-around player, as he’s earned some of his points at even-strength and some on the power-play.

In the KHL, Karri Ramo won his only start and has a 12-4-2 record for Avangard Omsk so far this season. He’s doing quite well.

In the SM-Liiga, Joni Ortio lost Friday’s start against Assat and was relegated to back-up duty on Saturday. He’ll probably start on Tuesday against league-leading JYP, which makes his benching make logical sense. HIFK didn’t do themselves any favours standings-wise, though, and they’re stuck in the middle of the standings pack. Markus Granlund had an assist on the weekend, though.
