Flames re-sign Andrew Mangiapane (two years, $2.425M AAV)

Folks, Brad Treliving’s vacation is looking a little more likely. The Calgary Flames have announced a new contract for forward Andrew Mangiapane. It’s a two year deal worth an average of $2.425 million per season.

Mangiapane will be an RFA when his deal expires following the 2021-22 season.

Mangiapane, 23, was arguably the Flames’ top player in 2019-20. The fourth year pro spent the entire season in the NHL and primarily played on the second line, joining the 3M (2.0) trio after supplanting Michael Frolik early in the season.

The winger had 17 goals and 32 points last season, almost entirely amassed at even strength. Facing some of the NHL’s top players on a shutdown line with Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk, Mangiapane proved that he was a strong 200-foot player who can forecheck, backcheck, and generate offense. And for that? He’s gotten a bigger paycheque.

The remaining piece of unfinished off-season business is RFA defender Oliver Kylington.

Here’s how the Flames’ cap situation looks, making a few (inexpensive) roster assumptions:

All-told, this roster adds up to $80.3 million, leaving about $1.2 million to re-sign Kylington and deal with injuries, illnesses and other in-season shuffling. It’s tight, but it’s probably doable.
