A bit of minor news following the Calgary Flames’ 3-0 loss to the Seattle Kraken in exhibition action on Tuesday night. As expected, the club has assigned junior forward Lucas Ciona back to the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds.
Ciona was the extra skater brought on the trip to Seattle, both in the event someone was dinged up in warmup and so that they could facilitate his return to his junior club. Ciona wasn’t part of the round of cuts on Saturday, and so got a couple extra days of practice in as a result.
Ciona was a sixth round selection by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft. He was a key supporting player in the Thunderbirds’ run to the WHL championship series last season, where they lost to the Edmonton Oil Kings.
With Ciona’s assignment to the WHL, the Flames’ camp roster has been reduced to 58 players.
