This one looks like the oppoosite of the previous game versus MTL, where the Flames lagged in terms of possession by the end of the game, but led in terms of chances and score nonetheless. This time it was the Bruins pushing shots to the outside and the Flames faliling away around the perimeter. Thanks to chasing from start to finish Calgary ran up the shot and ES possession differential, but, as mentioned, they had a lot of shots from the outside. They also managed to have shots blocked, bobbled or denied whenever they did manage to get into the scoring area. Flames probably had three or more odd-man rushes this evening where they didn’t get the puck on net, for instance.
In terms of individual performances, no one really stood out tonight. Staios got himself in toruble a couple of times and Giordano’s corsi and chance differential didn’t match (which is unusual), but it was one of those nights for that. The Flames top line spent less than half their night against Bergeron and they had some nice sequences, but they shot a lot of pucks into blocks/traffic/etc. Also, I got the feeling that the Flames were coached to shoot from odd angles tonight, perhaps because the scouting report on Thomas and his unorthodox style dictated such a strategy. Didn’t work if that’s the case.
All that said, it wasn’t a terrible performance by the Flames by any means. A few more PP’s or bounces and the score could have been reversed.
