Flames select Parker Bell at 155th overall

After waiting for a couple rounds, the Calgary Flames have made their second selection of the 2022 NHL Draft. In the fifth round, at 155th overall, they’ve selected big winger Parker Bell.
Bell’s a September birthday, born just 11 days after the cut-off for the 2021 NHL Draft, so he’s one of the older and more physically mature kids available. He’s listed at 6’4″ and 200 pounds, and he’s a left shot winger.
A product of Campbell River, BC, Bell has played two and a half seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City Americans. In 2021-22, he had 18 goals and 49 points in 64 games for Tri-City.
Bell was ranked 261st overall by FC Hockey. They noted he’s blessed with NHL size and uses it well, and that he’s a feisty player that gets into the thick of competition within games.
Based purely on the fact he has the size and work ethic to be a factor down-low, he may be able to develop into a bottom- six, physical presence type of role player.
The Flames don’t have a ton of big bodies in their system, so this selection makes sense in that respect. But there were probably players available with more offensive upside. (Perhaps they think they had enough offensive-minded guys and wanted something different.)
