The Calgary Flames got a bit of business done on Saturday morning. The club announced that head coach Darryl Sutter has been signed to a “multi-year” contract extension. Per general manager Brad Treliving, it’s a two-year extension that runs through the 2024-25 season.
Sutter rejoined the Flames midway through the 2020-21 season, replacing Geoff Ward on a three-year deal that ran through the 2022-23 season. This deal adds some time onto that and keeps Sutter around for the foreseeable future. Sutter previously made coaching stops in Chicago, San Jose and Los Angeles, and had an earlier tenure with the Flames.
The 64-year-old product of Viking, Alberta was one of six brothers to play in the NHL and one of three to become a head coach at the NHL level, with both Brian and Brent serving as head coaches for the Flames in the past.
#Flames GM Brad Treliving on Darryl Sutter: “To me, your team takes on the personality if your coach, and I think our team has done that.”
It’s not much of a stretch to say that Sutter has a Hall of Fame resume. In addition to a pair of Stanley Cup wins with the Kings, and a Cup Final appearance during his first Flames tenure, he’s among the most prolific and successful bench bosses in NHL history. He enters the 2022-23 season ranked 11th in regular season games coached and wins, and sixth in playoff games coached and tied for sixth in playoff wins.
