In the aftermath of last night’s 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Calgary Flames have made a roster move.
Last night, the Flames had zero extra healthy forwards with Kris Versteeg and Jaromir Jagr nursing injuries. The club has placed Kris Versteeg on the injured reserve and recalled forward Garnet Hathaway from the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League.
Hathaway, who turned 26 last week, is arguably no longer an NHL “prospect” given his age but he’s still a useful depth player. He’s an energy-filled, right-shot winger who’s found his scoring touch in Stockton; he has 19 points in 18 games, second on his team in scoring (behind Andrew Mangiapane) and tied for 11th in the AHL. This may be his last chance at showing he can be something at the NHL level, though, given the Flames also have Mangiapane, Morgan Klimchuk, Emile Poirier and Marek Hrivik – all younger than him – waiting in the wings.
In 41 career NHL games, all with Calgary, Hathaway has one goal and eight points. Look for him to potentially be reunited with Stockton linemate Mark Jankowski, currently the Flames’ third line center.
Since he cleared waivers prior to the season, Hathaway doesn’t need to clear again to go back down to the AHL unless he’s up for 30 days or plays in 10 games. Consequently, Freddie Hamilton’s waiver exemption expires on Dec. 1.
