The Calgary Flames will be looking to snap a worrisome three-game losing streak when they open a two-game series with the league-leading Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night as +155 underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Things went from bad to worse for Calgary in Sunday’s 7-1 loss to the rival Edmonton Oilers that marked the team’s fourth defeat in five outings ahead of Monday night’s game at Scotiabank Arena.
Flames vs Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report
In addition to marking the team’s worst defeat in over a year, Sunday’s loss to the Oilers as +110 road underdogs at online sports betting sites also leaves the Flames mired in sixth place in the North Division standings. Now lagging four points back of fourth-place Montreal, Calgary’s offense has been snake-bitten during the team’s current slide, with Flames shooters potting just a single goal in each of the team’s four recent losses.
That bad luck was particularly apparent in Sunday’s contest, with Calgary outshooting the Oilers by a wide 44-24 margin. But the Flames had no answer for either an Oilers power play that converted three opportunities, or Connor McDavid, who put the game out of reach with a natural hat trick in the second period. And things get no easier against Auston Matthews and the red-hot Maple Leafs, who ride a three-game win streak into Monday’s action as -175 home favourites.
The Maple Leafs have been filling the net during their current surge, potting 14 total goals over their three recent wins. Matthews has been leading the attack, picking up four points in each of the past two games, while padding his league-leading goal total with four markers during that stretch. Toronto’s recent offensive explosion has lifted the club to the top of the NHL team stats, with a top-ranked 3.79 goals per game. The team has also avoided defeat in regulation in all but one of its past 14 outings, and has seen six of its past seven wins come by multi-goal margins.
Now sporting a six-point lead over the second-place Oilers in the North Division standings, the Maple Leafs have rocketed to short -225 favourites to claim their first divisional crown since 2000. Toronto also finds itself among the favourites on the Stanley Cup odds, trailing only the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning as a +750 wager.
The Maple Leafs also managed to sweep a two-game set with the Flames in Calgary last month with a pair of one-goal wins. However, the team has struggled in recent dates with the Flames at Scotiabank Arena, scoring just two total goals while losing two straight.
