Matthews has been leading the attack, picking up four points in each of the past two games, while padding his league-leading goal total with four markers during that stretch. Toronto’s recent offensive explosion has lifted the club to the top of the NHL team stats, with a top-ranked 3.79 goals per game. The team has also avoided defeat in regulation in all but one of its past 14 outings, and has seen six of its past seven wins come by multi-goal margins.
Now sporting a six-point lead over the second-place Oilers in the North Division standings, the Maple Leafs have rocketed to short -225 favourites to claim their first divisional crown since 2000. Toronto also finds itself among the favourites on the Stanley Cup odds, trailing only the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning as a +750 wager.
The Maple Leafs also managed to sweep a two-game set with the Flames in Calgary last month with a pair of one-goal wins. However, the team has struggled in recent dates with the Flames at Scotiabank Arena, scoring just two total goals while losing two straight.
