The Calgary Flames have 10 games remaining in their regular season schedule. They still have a mathematical path to a playoff spot. But that path to the post-season relies on the Flames stringing together a bunch of wins – something we’ve seen them do this season – and the St. Louis Blues hitting the ditch a bit… something we haven’t seen them do over the past month or two.
As we await the start of a hectic week of Flames hockey, let’s dive into the mailbag!
So here’s the math right now… The Flames have 10 games left, the Blues have seven games left.
  • Any combination of Flames losses and Blues wins totalling 6.5 eliminates the Flames from playoff contention.
  • Any combination of Blues losses and Flames wins totalling 11 clinches a playoff spot for the Flames.
  • (An overtime or shootout loss for either team reduces the elimination/clinching number by 0.5.)
The Flames can win out and still miss the playoffs. They cannot make the playoffs without the Blues starting to lose some games. But they can do a lot to help themselves if they keep playing well and winning.
Considering where external expectations were heading into this season, this hockey club has taken a gigantic step forward in 2024-25.
It’s hard to say, but I wouldn’t necessarily rule it out.
The Flames are still early in their retooling process, and they need to keep accumulating young talent with the hopes that one or two of them emerge into stars for them. The 2024 draft was a great first step. And they’ll probably aim to keep on that track. But, the Flames also have a ton of salary cap flexibility, a lot of prospect depth and many draft choices. So if an opportunity emerges for them to address an organizational need, I think they’ll strongly consider anything that won’t derail their progress.
To be eligible to play in the AHL after the trade deadline, players need to be on the AHL roster as of the trade deadline. So of the players on the Flames’ current roster, only Adam Klapka and Dryden Hunt are eligible to go down to the Wranglers. Everybody else, including Dustin Wolf, are not eligible.
