How have the Calgary Flames progressed over 40 games?

The Calgary Flames have played 40 games so far in the 2022-23 season. They’re currently in a playoff spot and despite some unevenness in their game early on, they seem to have rounded into form.

Here’s a snapshot – in 10 game increments – at how the Flames have fared so far.

We’ve cut the season into four 10-game segments.

The Flames posted their best offensive segment of the season in their most recent segment, along with more or less maintaining their defensive progress. They’ve been a pretty solid defensive team for the past 30-ish games.

The Flames went 5-4-1 in their opening 10 games. They began going 5-1-0, then lost the final four games of the segment, beginning a very streaky section of their schedule. Nine of these games were played at home.

Their top three scorers were Nazem Kadri (6 goals, 11 points), Tyler Toffoli (4 goals, 8 points) and Rasmus Andersson (1 goal, 8 points). Jacob Markstrom started in eight of 10 games, winning four times and posting a .900 save percentage.

The Flames went 4-4-2 in their second 10 games. They alternated between bad and good segments: they lost three in a row, then won four of five, then lost two more. Eight of this segment’s games were played on the road.

Their top three scorers were Elias Lindholm (3 goals, 10 points), Adam Ruzicka (4 goals, 8 points), and Noah Hanifin and Andersson (both had 1 goal and 6 points). Markstrom started in eight games, winning four times, but posting a shaky .877 save percentage.

The Flames went 4-3-3 in their third 10 games. Again, it was good stretches and bad stretches. They alternated wins and losses for basically the entire segment, closing out with a four game losing streak – three of the losses were overtime/shootout losses. Six games were played at home.

Their top three scorers were Jonathan Huberdeau and Ruzicka (2 goals, 9 points each) and Mikael Backlund (1 goal, 9 points). Dan Vladar started in six games, winning four of them and posting a .904 save percentage. Markstrom started four times, never posting a win but posting a .927 save percentage.

The Flames went 6-3-1 in their fourth 10 game segment. While the first game was a loss – their fifth in a row, extending one that ended the previous segment – they never lost consecutive games. Six games were played on the road.

Their top three scorers were Lindholm (3 goals, 12 points), Toffoli (5 goals, 11 points) and Kadri (4 goals, 8 points) and Huberdeau (2 goals, 8 points). Markstrom started eight times, winning five games and posting a .897 save percentage. Vladar started twice, posting a win and an overtime loss (and a .905 save percentage).
