Jakob Pelletier invited to Hockey Canada’s virtual World Junior camp

Another week, another bit of news regarding one of the Calgary Flames’ top prospects. Forward Jakob Pelletier was named to Hockey Canada’s roster for their upcoming virtual World Junior camp.

Pelletier, 19, was superb last season for the Moncton Wildcats. He was invited to Canada’s World Junior selection camp but suffered a concussion in the final game before the camp and wasn’t able to vie for a spot.

Now the captain of the Val-d’Or Foreurs after an off-season trade, Pelletier is still eligible for the World Juniors and will be among the top contenders to force his way onto the team. Of the 13 forwards on Team Canada last winter, eight are too old to return to this year’s tournament. There are many spots available and Pelletier is a player with a lot of skills. (He was also the QMJHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player this past season, which may make a difference in a short tournament with strict IIHF officiating.)

Given the health situation across the globe, Hockey Canada’s camp will be a little bit different this year. Per Hockey Canada’s release: “Five goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 26 forwards will attend the five-day virtual camp, participating in a variety of sessions with a focus on player development through online education.” The camp runs July 27-31 on web browsers throughout Canada.
