Johnny Gaudreau would like to remain a Flame long-term

2 years agoFor the fifth time in six seasons, Johnny Gaudreau led the Calgary Flames in points. He’s become one of the club’s most consistently productive offensive weapons during his tenure and he’s eligible to sign a contract extension when the final year of his current deal begins on July 28.
Gaudreau sure sounds like he’d like to stick around for awhile.
If Tree and the owners are happy with the way I’ve played here the past six, seven years, it’s something we can figure out this upcoming summer. I would love to do that. I love the city of Calgary and I love playing here. I don’t think I’ve ever not once said I don’t haven’t wanted be here. The guys in the locker room are great in there. I’ve always enjoyed my time here. If that’s something that comes up this summer, that’s something I’d be very willing to do and try to get done.
A fourth round selection of the Flames in the 2011 NHL Draft, his contractual status has been a source of anxiety for Flames faithful ever since. And it’s odd, because Gaudreau was consistent about his desire to sign with the team while he was tearing up the college ranks (and then he signed). And he was consistent about his desire to sign with the Flames long-term during his entry-level deal (and then he signed). And then he’s been consistent about his desire to remain with the Flames during his current contract.
We’ll see what can be hashed out between Gaudreau’s representative Lewis Gross and Flames GM Brad Treliving this summer. Gaudreau’s entering the final year of a contract that pays him $6.75 million annually.
