Jonathan Huberdeau has pledged his brain to medical research

1 year agoIn advance of his first training camp with the Calgary Flames, Jonathan Huberdeau made a big commitment by signing an eight-year contract extension. He’s made another significant commitment, pledging his brain to medical research (to be conducted following his passing) as part of a series of pledges announced towards Project Enlist Canada.
In a media release, Huberdeau made the following statement:
As an NHL player, I’m very aware of the impact of traumatic brain injuries, concussions and the link to other mental health issues… I’m proud to support Canadian military Veterans by pledging to donate my brain to Project Enlist and support research to improve the quality of life of all military personnel who so bravely and courageously served our country.
Project Enlist is a program under the Concussion Legacy Foundation Canada’s umbrella, aiming to push research on traumatic brain injuries, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and post-traumatic stress disorder forward. You’re probably familiar with some of the research being done by their American partners, who are centred at Boston University and pioneered research on CTE (and the linkages between concussions and brain issues later in life). CLFC has partnered with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Brain Health Imaging Centre to conduct research on donated brain tissue.
