The Calgary Flames will be aiming to avoid losing four games in a row for the second time in less than three weeks when they wrap up a two-game series with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night as +130 home underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Calgary’s recent struggles continued with Sunday’s 4-2 loss to Toronto that marked the team’s eighth defeat in 10 overall outings going into Monday’s matchup at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Maple Leafs vs Flames | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Flames are quickly running out of time to turn things around and return to playoff contention. Now sporting a middling 16-20-3 overall record, the team has seen its continued road woes extend to recent dates on home ice. Calgary has fallen to defeat in four of five clashes at Scotiabank Saddledome during its current slide, scoring just 2.40 goals per game over that stretch. That has contributed to a reliable 5-1-2 run for the UNDER on the totals at online betting sites over their past eight outings.
Of particular concern is the Flames’ inability to slam the door after scoring early. Calgary has seized early leads in six of the team’s past 10 contests, including two of its past three dates with Toronto. However, they have failed to sustain that momentum over a full 60 minutes, getting outscored by a wide 24-11 margin after the first period over their past 10 contests.
Despite those struggles, the Flames have managed to not let things get out of hand while losing five of seven to Toronto this season. The team has limited the Maple Leafs to three or fewer goals in five of their seven meetings. However, Toronto has traditionally enjoyed more offensive success when visiting Calgary, averaging almost four goals per game in six dates since 2016.
The Maple Leafs will be looking to extend their current hot streak when they hit the ice on Monday as -150 road favorites. Toronto has been steady at both ends of the ice during a 6-0-1 run that has strengthened the club’s lead atop the North Division standings to six points over Edmonton and Winnipeg.
The Maple Leafs have allowed just 12 total goals during their seven-game surge, and have been particularly impressive when shorthanded, killing off 14 of 15 penalties during that stretch. Toronto has also shown an increasingly stingy edge as recent games have progressed, giving up just three total goals after the second intermission over its past seven contests. That steady play has paid dividends for those taking the UNDER, which has gone 5-1-1 in Toronto’s past seven. The Maple Leafs have also emerged victorious in 11 of their past 16 when the UNDER has prevailed.
