The New York Rangers have made a transaction.
Multiple sources reported on Monday morning that Arthur Kaliyev has been claimed off waivers by the New York Rangers.
Kaliyev was selected in the second round of the 2019 draft by the Los Angeles Kings. In 2021-22, he scored 14 goals and 27 points, following that up with 13 goals and 28 points in 56 games the following season. However, his play took a hit in 2023-24, scoring seven goals and 15 points in 51 games.
The 23-year-old suffered a broken collarbone in training camp and has yet to appear in a National Hockey League game this season. However, Kaliyev played five games on a conditioning stint with the Kings’ American Hockey League team, scoring a goal and two points in those games.
The Ducks extend Frank Vatrano
Sticking with teams in California, the Anaheim Ducks have extended Frank Vatrano to a three-year, $18 million contract. Interestingly, the cap hit is only $4.57 million, as $9 million is in deferred salary, where he’ll earn $900,000 a year for 10 years beginning in 2035.
The Anaheim Ducks have signed F Frank Vatrano to a 3-year, $18M contract. The deal carries an AAV of $4.57M due to a $9M salary deferral, with Vatrano set to earn $900K/year for 10 years starting in 2035. (HT @PierreVLeBrun)
Another Los Angeles-based sports team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been doing similar with players as of late. They signed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to a 10-year, $700 million deal during the 2023-24 off-season. However, Ohtani only sees $2 million of that from the Dodgers until the end of his contract, when his deferrals kick in and he’ll be owed $68 million a year until 2043. Ohtani is one of many players the Dodgers have signed
Shifting gears back to hockey, Vatrano scored a career-high 37 goals and 60 points in 82 games last season with the Anaheim Ducks. So far this season, the 30-year-old has 11 goals and 23 points in 38 games.
Linus Ullmark out week-to-week
According to Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green, netminder Linus Ullmark is out week-to-week with a back injury.
Head coach Travis Green says Linus Ullmark will be out week-to-week with a back injury.
The Senators acquired the 31-year-old netminder in June from the Boston Bruins, and he’s helped them fight for a postseason spot when he’s been healthy. As it stands, the Senators have a 19-17-2 record and are one point out of the final Wild Card spot, with three fewer games played than the Pittsburgh Penguins.
As for Ullmark, the 2022-23 Vezina Trophy-winning netminder has had a good season between the pipes for the Senators, as he has a .915 save percentage and a 2.38 goals against average in 23 games played.
Ullmark is one of several netminders who have suffered an injury lately, as Colorado Avalanche netminder Scott Wedgewood is out for a few weeks due to an injury, while Vancouver Canucks netminder Thatcher Demko left a game recently due to back spams.
