The Calgary Flames’ captain is up for another major National Hockey League award. Mark Giordano has been named a finalist for the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
The Mark Messier Leadership Award is awarded annually to an “Individual who leads by positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable cause.”
Giordano, 35, has been the Flames captain since the 2013-14 season and has been a fixture in the Norris Trophy conversation in that span. This past season he had a career year and led the Flames to their best regular season finish in 30 years. He’s also been repeatedly honoured for his off-ice contributions, notably the Team Giordano educational initiative that he runs with his wife, Lauren.
Giordano was a finalist for this award in 2016-17 (Columbus’ Nick Foligno won). Jarome Iginla won the award in 2008-09.
