Mark Giordano Will Undergo Surgery, Done For Season

Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving had an injury update for reporters in Philadelphia this afternoon, and it was not good.
Flames captain – and the team’s best player – Mark Giordano is to undergo surgery for a torn biceps tendon and will likely be done for the season. Treliving shared the news at his media scrum following the trade deadline, noting that the surgery typically has a 4 to 5 month recovery period.
It’s obviously devastating news for a Calgary Flames group that has really overachieved this season, riding sky-high shooting percentages and relying upon huge late-game comebacks. Giordano was a huge part of both of those phenomena, with Giordano being integral to their odd-man rushes by jumping into the play and leading the charge into the offensive zone.
It’s the second straight season that Giordano’s missed significant time due to injury – and third season in the past four. The 31-year-old has been considered a Norris Trophy front-runner all season long, amassing a career-high 48 points in 61 games before being injured against the New Jersey Devils.
Heading back into action tomorrow night against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Flames are sitting in a playoff spot. Now with 20 games remaining, the challenge for this group will be making the playoffs without their locker room (and on-ice) leader.
