Milan Lucic has waived his no-move clause for the Seattle expansion draft

2 years agoWhen Milan Lucic became a Calgary Flame in July 2019, concerns from those following the club immediately moved to the Seattle Kraken’s expansion draft. Would Lucic agree to waive the no-move clause that required him to be protected? What would the Flames do if he didn’t waive?
Well, worry no more: Sportsnet’s Eric Francis has confirmed that Lucic has been asked to waive formally and has done so.
The veteran Flames winger has waived the no-movement clause in his contract for the Seattle Kraken expansion draft this summer.“As much as I want to stay in Calgary I didn’t want to handcuff Tree (GM Brad Treliving) in the expansion draft so I agreed that I would waive it for the expansion draft if he didn’t want to protect me,” Lucic told Sportsnet.ca.“I really enjoy it here in Calgary and I’d love nothing more than to spend the rest of my career here.”
There was an urban legend going around that part of Lucic’s agreement to waive his no-move to come to Calgary two years ago was tied with an agreement to waive for the expansion draft – effectively, Flames general manager Brad Treliving offering to rescue Lucic from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Lucic waiving at the expansion draft. Well, it turns out that the legend is basically true: Lucic confirmed to Francis that he verbally agreed to waive back in 2019 and kept his word.
The waiving of Lucic’s no-move makes the Flames’ expansion draft situation much less complicated, as they can protect all their important forwards (barring a trade) and just need to figure out if they want to expose Mark Giordano or Chris Tanev on the blueline.
