Mixed results for Flames after World Championship opening weekend

Five members of the Calgary Flames roster are currently in scenic Slovakia vying for the 2019 World Hockey Championship. Through the first four days of competition, these players have experienced some mixed results.

The Czech Republic has won two of their three outings thus far: they beat Sweden and Norway by a combined 12-4 score to assert their dominance over Scandinavia, but suffered a one-sided 3-0 setback to Russia on Monday morning.

Frolik played really well in their two wins and was decent (if unspectacular) in their loss. He had the game-winning goals in the Czech Republic’s two victories and didn’t hit the scoresheet at all in their loss. In three games, Frolik has three goals, an assist, eight shots on goal, and a minus-one rating.

Sweden got off to a rough start to the tournament, suffering that aforementioned 5-2 loss to the Czechs on opening night. They followed that up with an 8-0 beat-down of Italy and a one-sided 9-1 win over Norway. Sure, their dominating wins were as expected, but they still delivered big-time.

Lindholm has been a bit of a disappointment thus far. Through two outings, he has combined for two assists, a penalty, eight shots on goal, and a minus-two. And that’s including a pair of one-sided wins which really should’ve helped pump up his numbers.

Team USA’s tournament has been all over the place so far. They were flat in a 4-1 loss to the host Slovakians, followed by a very impressive 7-1 pummeling of France, followed by a back-and-forth 3-2 overtime win over Finland. As with Sweden, it’s a very “Well, we expected them to destroy France” kind of performance.

Gaudreau has been pretty quiet in the tournament so far, with a goal, five shots and an even plus/minus. Hanifin has zero points, one shot, and a plus-four rating. Ryan has zero points, four shots and an even plus/minus.
