NHL History: Al MacInnis sets Calgary Flames record for points in a game by defenceman

As the Calgary Flames embarked on their journey to the 1986 Stanley Cup finals, it was largely done on the back of defenceman Al MacInnis.

By the time the playoffs were over, he led all playoff players in assists in with 15 and was tied for second in points with 19. He lit the league in those 21 playoff games.

And one of his best performances in those playoffs came today in ’86, when he set a Flames record for most points in a game by a defenceman. MacInnis and the Flames were playing in game two in the conference championships against the St. Louis Blues, where he scored four points.

His first was an assist on a Joe Mullen goal in the first, before adding two more assists to goals by Doug Risebrough and Dan Quinn in the third. MacInnis got a goal himself on the powerplay at the 18:15 mark of the final frame.

MacInnis, who had been drafted by Calgary 15th overall in 1981, played with the Flames until he signed an offer sheet to join the St. Louis Blues in 1994. Calgary got back two second-round picks and defenceman Phil Housley, who played in Calgary for two seasons from 1994-96, before later returning between 1998-01.
