Notes and quotes from Tuesday’s win over Winnipeg

The @Calgary Flames beat the @Winnipeg Jets in exhibition action on Tuesday evening at the Saddledome. (And they probably should have given the disparity in the two lineups.) Following the game, head coach Bill Peters had a few thoughts on his team’s performance.

In part because of how their lineups have gone in the prior five pre-season games, the Flames hadn’t gotten a ton of work – or had a ton of success – on the power play. With @Milan Lucic filling in for @Matthew Tkachuk as the net-front presence on the top unit, the Flames had a lot of time with the man advantage. Peters seemed pleased with the results he saw.

“I thought they looked much better tonight,” said Peters. “We spent a little time on it in practice and got to do that moving forward. So that was real good. As dumb as it sounds, it was good to take a penalty in the third so we got some penalty kill action in there, too. Got everyone out, I thought the first group that went over the boards did a good job with some up-ice pressure. I thought it was a good night for what we needed as a coaching staff and what they needed as players.”

On Tuesday morning, Peters had a few comments about the play of two of his team’s prospective young players – forward @Dillon Dube and defender @Oliver Kylington.

Did Peters like what he saw from the youngsters against Winnipeg?

In his first outing, @David Rittich faced four shots against Vancouver. In his second outing, he faced eight shots against San Jose. He was a bit busier against Winnipeg, facing 20 shots and pitching a shutout. Peters opted not to yank him after 40 minutes due to how the game was going for him.

“No, I ended [any talk of taking him out] in the tunnel on the way off the ice, I said we were gonna leave him in, give him 60 minutes,” said Peters. “And you know what? The shots are the shots, but he had a lot of goalie touches and he had communication with his D and he had to fight through some screens. And that was good. They ended up with 10 shots in the third, so that was the right thing to do.”

Rittich wasn’t busy, but joked he had to “check his pants” after a couple eventful moments in the third period. Peters noted that the coaching staff is changing their goaltending plan for Thursday’s San Jose and considering different options for that game.
