In the history of the Flames franchise, 606 players have tugged a red sweater over their heads and suited up for a regular season game. Of those, 22 played just a single game for either the Calgary or Atlanta Flames. We call them One Game Wonders.
Let’s talk about another One Game Wonder, Lane MacDermid.
MacDermid was a hockey kid growing up. The son of longtime NHLer Paul MacDermid, he was born in Hartford but grew up in Ontario. He played in the OHL with the Owen Sound Attack and Windsor Spitfires and was a fourth round pick of the Boston Bruins in 2009.
His pro career was short.
  • He spent 2009-10 and 2010-11 with the AHL’s Providence Bruins
  • He spent 2011-12 with Providence, but got five NHL games in with Boston
  • He split 2012-13 with Providence and Boston before being traded to Dallas for Jaromir Jagr
  • He began 2013-14 with Dallas but was traded to the Flames early on and sent to Abbotsford
MacDermid’s last NHL appearance was with the Flames. He was called up on Dec. 5. He played against Colorado in a 3-2 loss on Dec. 6. He was pointless, minus-1 and played 4:08 – also getting dinged for goalie interference and a fighting major in the first period. He was returned to Abbotsford on Dec. 12.
In 22 games with the Heat, MacDermid had two points. His last game was Feb 5. He was suspended by the team for missing practice on Feb. 16 and formally retired on Feb. 24, citing no longer having the desire to play pro hockey. His seemingly dim NHL prospects and the notion of trying to grind it out in the A was too much for him at age 24.
MacDermid’s brother Kurtis remains in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings. Presumably Lane got a job outside of hockey somewhere.
