One of the greatest Calgary Flames in franchise history returns to the Saddledome for the first time as a member of the Seattle Kraken. Mark Giordano is expected to be in the line-up for Seattle as they visit the Flames for a pre-season game!
The puck drops just after 7 p.m. MT and the action can be seen via a stream on the Flames website and heard on Sportsnet 960 The Fan! We sincerely apologize for the headline.

The Flames

Lines for tonight, via Pat Steinberg:
Tkachuk – Lindholm – Coleman
Gaudreau – Backlund – Mangiapane
Lucic – Gawdin – Lewis
Kirkland – Froese – Duehr
Zadorov – Andersson
Kylington – Tanev
Välimäki – Stone
Dan Vladar makes his second start of the pre-season for the Flames, backed up by Adam Werner. Both are dressing for the third time this pre-season.
Making their 2021 pre-season debuts are Matthew Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm, Blake Coleman, Johnny Gaudreau, Justin Kirkland and Chris Tanev. Making their third appearances (in as many games) are Glenn Gawdin and Juuso Välimäki, in case you’re curious who management seemingly wants longer looks at.
The Flames have been out-scored 8-2 through their first two games, but they dressed far less impressive rosters in those two outings.

The Kraken

We don’t have lines for Seattle, who played last night in Edmonton, but here’s who they’re expected to dress:
  • Goaltenders Philipp Grubauer and Joey Daccord
  • Defensemen Will Borgen, Mark Giordano, Haydn Fleury, Adam Larsson, Cale Fleury and Carson Soucy
  • Forwards Jordan Eberle, Ryan Donato, Alex True, Nathan Bastian, Riley Sheahan, Jared McCann, Jaden Schwartz, Mason Appleton, Jacob Melanson, Morgan Geekie, Joonas Donskoi and Kole Lind
Oh hi there, Mark.

Players to watch

Vladar has been very good in net for the Flames, and seems to be cementing himself as the number-two goaltender through his first two games in pre-season. Can Werner close the gap a bit?
How will Coleman look alongside Lindholm and Tkachuk in his first (pre-season) twirl as a Flame?

The Flames who haven’t played yet

Presuming everyone who skated in the game group today plays, here’s a rundown of the players on the Flames camp roster who haven’t dressed through three pre-season tilts:
  • Goalies: Jacob Markström, Dustin Wolf, Matt Greenfield
  • Defensemen: Noah Hanifin, Yan Kuznetsov, Ilya Solovyov, Jérémie Poirier, Colton Poolman, Johannes Kinnvall (inj.)
  • Forwards: Sean Monahan, Emilio Pettersen, Ryan Francis, Eetu Tuulola, Alex Gallant, Mark Simpson, Dmitry Zavgorodniy, Connor Zary (inj.)
Greenfield, Gallant and Simpson are on AHL deals, so them not playing is logical. Zary and Kinnvall are injured, so that also tracks. Hanifin and Monahan are expected to play later on in pre-season, as they’re both coming off fairly significant off-season surgeries. The remaining names just seem to be players that Flames brass has kept sidelined so they can get extra looks at other players. (If Gawdin and Välimäki are playing three consecutive games, somebody else has to sit.)
