Prospect Round-Up (October 11 2014)

‘Twas a bit lighter schedule for the prospects tonight. The Oshawa Generals and Charlottetown Islanders were off tonight, so no OHL or QMJHL results. One prospect returned from injury, while another missed a game due to a new one.

AHL: The Adirondack Flames – without the services of Trevor Gillies due to an automatic one-game suspension for a game misconduct late in a game – lost their second game in a row via a 5-1 decision against the Albany Devils. It was the Flames’ debut at their new home, the Glens Falls Civic Center. Bryce Van Brabant was -2 in his AHL debut – replacing Gillies – and Joni Ortio stopped 25 of 30 shots. Ryan Culkin had 5 shots and an assist on Brett Kulak’s power-play goal, which was the lone home goal scored in Adirondack’s home-opener. AHL veteran Paul Thompson had 4 goals for the Devils. The Baby Flames return to action on Thursday night when they host the Rockford Ice Hogs.

WHL: The Victoria Royals played their second game in as many nights in Alberta. They fared poorly, losing 8-2 to Medicine Hat. Keegan Kanzig had an assist and was +1, but he also had two minor penalties. Austin Carroll continues his strong start to his over-age year, putting up a goal and an assist and a +2 rating, along with three minor penalties – one which led to a Tigers PP goal.

Elsewhere in the Dub, Eric Roy finally made his 2014-15 debut with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He was all over the score-sheet with an assist, a +1 rating and a fight in Brandon’s 6-4 win over Red Deer. The Wheat Kings visit the Calgary Hitmen on Sunday afternoon.

ECAC: Colgate lost to St. Cloud State 3-1. Tim Harrison played and had a shot, but no points.

Hockey East: Mark Jankowski missed Providence College’s game with Ohio State with an injury. Jon Gillies played a much tighter game, allowing just a single goal in a 2-1 overtime win over the Buckeyes. John Gilmour also missed a game with an injury.

SHL: Djurgardens IF lost a tight 3-2 game to Skelleftea AIK. Adam Ollas Mattsson played his second SHL game (he previously played a pair of Champions League games sandwiched around a junior team stint) and was even with zero points. By all accounts, he’s been “fine,” in the sense that people I’ve spoken with who’ve seen these games couldn’t point an 18-year-old defender out on the ice.
