The Calgary Flames finished off their five game road trip on Sunday night with a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals. Here are selected notes and reactions following the game.

A good effort that just fell short

Speaking to the media following the game, Flames head coach Bill Peters pointed to the fourth Capitals goal as something his group just couldn’t overcome.
I thought the effort was there. We needed that kill in the third, the first one, we needed to keep it at 3-2 there. They got a little bit of wiggle room and then we couldn’t find a way to get the next one. To me that was a big power play goal that they got.
He noted that the Capitals got players behind their defenders, a sign that they need to work a bit on their attention to detail. But overall he was positive about his team’s play.

Here comes Mangiapane

The absence of Milan Lucic resulted in three of four lines being shuffled. Andrew Mangiapane got bumped up to his fairly familiar spot on the second line with Matthew Tkachuk and Mikael Backlund, and he also got power play time in Lucic’s second unit spot.
“He’s got a lot of energy,” said Peters. “He’s tenacious. He’s on pucks. He hangs onto pucks, looks to make plays. Real nice play on his goal. Good play by the line, all three guys found a way to contribute. But Mangy’s starting to come. He’s a confident player, he gives us a lot of pace on that line, so he’s been good.”

Congrats to the Nationals

The Nationals won the World Series last week and, in fine Washington sports fashion, they have attempted to drink all the alcohol.
Congrats, Nationals. It’s always nice when a league whether pitchers have to bat – the way nature intended – wins the championship.
