Quips and Quotes: Flames lose to the Sharks 3-1

4 years agoThe Calgary Flames lost to the San Jose Sharks by a 3-1 score on Sunday night. Here are selected reactions from after the game.
An improvement over Saturday night
On Saturday in Vegas, the Flames got their show run by the Vegas Golden Knights. On Sunday, the Flames were right there with the Sharks for the duration.
Flames head coach Bill Peters praised his team’s efforts in the loss.
Much better effort as far as that goes and a better job skating and moving our feet. I thought the Backlund line was dangerous, had lots of good looks. So, some things we can build off for sure.
Cam Talbot’s first outing as a Flame
Talbot made his first official appearance as a Flames netminder. In his media address, Peters broke down the goals Talbot allowed and downplayed them a bit – the first goal was a bounce off a skate and the others were similarly ones he didn’t have much of a chance on. Talbot allowed goals on the first and fourth shots he saw, but then he settled down.
Peters on Talbot: “He made the saves he needed to make, so that was good to see.”
The special teams breakdown
The Flames had four power plays in this game. They generated two shots and zero goals. Most crucially, a gaffe on a second period man advantage swung the game and gave the Sharks some much-needed insurance.

That’s a big goal. It’s 2-1. Big time of the game. We just had a breakaway… then Monny hits a post when it’s 2-1 when we’re on the power play, and then they go down and make it 3-1. We needed something out of the power play, for sure, and didn’t get it here tonight.
Fun facts
The Flames have scored first just once this season. Of the teams who’ve played as many games, only Winnipeg, San Jose and Toronto have also scored first once.
The Flames have led for just 48:19 of their first six games, sixth-least in the NHL. (And four of the teams that have led less have played one or two fewer games.) They have trailed the second-most in the league behind San Jose.
In short: it hasn’t been a great start to the season for the Flames.
