The Calgary Flames played their first home game of the 2020-21 season on Saturday night before an empty Scotiabank Saddledome. They scored a power play goal in each period en route to a 3-0 shutout win over the Vancouver Canucks.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

Jacob Markstrom

Nursing a one-goal lead in the first period, the Flames took a pair of penalties – by Sam Bennett and Mikael Backlund – that resulted in the Canucks being awarded one minute and 21 seconds of uninterrupted five-on-three power play time. The scenario had the potential to upend the Flames’ fragile advantage.
Instead, the Canucks were credited with two shots on goal – plus a missed shots and two blocked shots by Chris Tanev – and the Flames escaped with their lead intact. (Mark Giordano and Tanev both played 2:29 of continuous ice time during the overlapping pair of Flames penalties.) After a 32 save performance, Markstrom discussed the impact of the big penalty kill.
It’s obviously good. It gives us a little bit of momentum and, like you said, it was a key point. We were up by one and they got the three-on-five. Once again, I can’t say enough good things about the guys. The special teams was the difference maker today both for our offense and for our defense to keep them out of our net. I thought our killers did a great job of blocking shots and when the shots were coming, I could see most of the pucks and they kept the lane clear. The guys did a great job today and I can’t give them enough credit for today’s win.

Geoff Ward

On Thursday in Winnipeg, the Flames were uneven at five-on-five. They were out-chanced 23-18 (9-4 in high-danger situations). On Saturday against the Canucks, the Flames were a bit more even-keel. They out-chanced Vancouver 21-13 overall (and 5-2 in high-danger situations).
Ward shared his thoughts on their five-on-five play.
I thought it was good. I thought everybody contributed tonight. I thought everybody had good games, and so I really felt like we were able to utilize the depth of our lineup better than we were able to in the first game. And I thought the guys did a really good job five-on-five of playing the right way. So, all in all, our five-on-five play took a step forward tonight.
