Quotable: the Flames lose to the Canucks 5-1

3 years agoSo, the Calgary Flames returned home after a week in Vancouver and played their fourth game in seven days against the Canucks. They struggled at times and lost 5-1 to Vancouver, never leading during the game.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.
Jacob Markstrom
Markstrom allowed a season-high five goals against in the loss, with all five coming at even strength. Post-game, he didn’t mince words, noting he needs to be better. When asked about his pair of adventurous poke-checks in the second period – against Tanner Pearson and Bo Horvat – he also didn’t hold back.
I had no business going out on either one of them. One, I got lucky enough that it hit my pad with the puck and on the other one they scored. You know, you want to help the team win and stop pucks, not to give goals away like that. It’s frustrating when you’re helping the other team instead of helping your own team.
Mark Giordano
Giordano was asked about his feelings about the 5-1 loss (and how frustrating the game was).
Pretty frustrating game. I thought, again, we didn’t have a start we wanted. in the first five minutes I don’t think we were sharp. When we got the game to 2-1 there in the second, I thought that if we can get through the period at that score or better, we were going to have a good night. But the next shift after we scored one they got one back and got another one. It’s sort of tough to swallow those goals at the end there.
Geoff Ward
Ward was asked to sum up his team’s four games against Vancouver. (He also called giving up the two goals after Mangiapane made the game 2-1 “inexcusable.”
Inconsistent is probably the best way, but we’ve been talking about that for a while now. It’s time to put this thing to be and take charge and take control of what we can. We certainly can control the way we start. We certainly can control how we pay attention to details, how hard we compete, how much we care. All those things are certainly within our control. It’s time for us to start giving a shit about it.
Ward was asked about the team’s poor starts and how concerning the trend of them is.
It’s concerning, there’s no question. It’s something that we have to get solved. For me, there’s no excuse not to be ready to play a hockey game. Really. This is the National Hockey League. These are the best players in the world. They know how to prepare to play, so… We’ve got to solve it, for sure, but these guys have played enough hockey to understand what they need to do in order to get themselves ready to play. They know what their ideal performance state and how to get into it and all that kind of stuff and they’ve got to start getting there.I shouldn’t say they’ve got to start getting there, we’ve got to start getting there as a team. It’s not just one or two guys. We’ve just got to do a much, much better job of it, as a team, getting ready to play. There’s no excuse for it.
