The Calgary Flames made three announcements today.
  1. F Ben Street has cleared waivers and has been returned to the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat.
  2. G Karri Ramo has an MCL injury. No word yet on severity or timelines.
  3. G Joni Ortio has been recalled from the AHL to replace Ramo.
Ramo’s not yet on the IR, so Street had to head down to open a roster spot for Ortio to use. If Ramo is placed on the IR, I’d expect the club to bring up another forward from Abbotsford.
Ramo’s loss could be big for the club. He’s 11-10-4 with a 2.66 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. He’s the team’s best goalie right now and the only tender with a winning record.
Street had 1 point in 13 NHL games this year, playing primarily on the fourth line, but he’s most commonly been a healthy scratch in recent games. He’ll head back to the farm and take part in the AHL All-Star Game next week in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. He amassed 33 point in 31 AHL appearances.
Ortio is the lone Flames property left from the 2009 NHL Draft, but has quietly been very good on the farm in his first season back in North America in a few years. He’s 19-5-0 with a 2.08 goals against average and a .930 save percentage with the Heat this year. Granted, the Heat are really good this season (and it’s the AHL), but those are pretty good minor league numbers. Now, can he translate that to the NHL?
We’ll probably find out on the upcoming three-game road trip.
UPDATE: Per the Flames, Ortio would be able to be returned to the AHL for the Olympic Break, as well.
