The Calgary Flames got a key contribution from one of their rookie defenders late in third period of their 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. Rasmus Andersson scored his first career National Hockey League goal.
The Flames’ first selection in the 2015 NHL Draft – which happened to be in the second round due to a few trades – Andersson started the season on the Stockton Heat roster but was recalled when Travis Hamonic suffered facial injuries in the season opener. When the blueline got healthy again, Andersson stuck around.
It took 40 NHL games and 44 shots on goal, but Andersson’s first goal was a big one that helped spark the team’s comeback against the Flyers. He shared his thoughts following the game.
You always want to be out there when you’re down a goal or up a goal. You always want to be out there the last minute of the game. That’s why you play. You kind of want to be the hero. But I kind it was just a resilient effort. We stick with it the whole 60 minutes. Some unlucky bounces, but we managed to get it through and get a big overtime win.
