Flames extend MacKenzie Weegar (eight years, $6.25M AAV)

The Calgary Flames could be getting some substantial business done on Friday, per a report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Per Friedman, the Flames are closing in on an extension with blueliner MacKenzie Weegar.

The deal is eight years at $50 million with an average annual value of $6.25 million – more or less right where Friedman reportedly it would be, in the vicinity of the recent Hampus Lindholm deal in Boston. The cap hit will tie Weegar as the 34th highest among blueliners in the league next season.

Weegar, 28, came to the Flames back in July in the blockbuster trade that made Matthew Tkachuk a Florida Panther and Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt and a conditional pick the property of the Flames. A seventh-round selection by Florida in the 2013 NHL Draft – only five guys were taken after he was – Weegar has carved out a really good career so far in the NHL. In 306 NHL games, Weegar has 27 goals and 121 points.

Weegar’s extension doesn’t take effect until the 2023-24 season.
